Mandated Reporter Training on Adult Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation: Modules 1 & 2
Mandated reporters of adult abuse span a wide range of professions. In Ohio, for example, nursing home workers, attorneys, financial planners, dentists, pharmacists, clergy and real estate brokers are among the many professionals who are required by law to report known and suspected abuse of older adults. Two modules from Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging provide mandated reporters with consistent and practical training. The self-guided modules enable mandated reporters to understand the types of abuse, recognize potential cases of abuse, and know when and how to report them to the proper authorities. Simply put, training professionals in identification and reporting protocols can reduce suffering and save lives.
Module 1, Understanding Abuse, is designed to help any mandated reporter understand and define the various types of abuse. State-specific definitions for Ohio are used. Module 1 enables participants to understand the reasons why abuse is so underreported across the country. A case study is used to exemplify real-world scenarios and aid participants in identifying potentially abusive situations.
Module 2, Recognizing and Reporting Abuse, helps mandated reporters understand their responsibility to report abuse in Ohio. It defines capacity and competence, and the challenges they can pose to mandated reporters. Module 2 provides participants with a downloadable Reporting Protocol for Abuse, a step-by-step guide for understanding which state agency is responsible for investigating abuse based on an adult victim's characteristics. It includes access to the Recognizing Abuse Tool, developed by the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging and used in various federally funded projects in Utah, Oklahoma and Texas to screen for abuse
The authors and planning committee have no conflicts of interest to disclose.
